05 Jul Columbine Canyon Hike and Red River Day Trip
Take a day trip to Red River and enjoy a delightful hike in Columbine Canyon and lunch with your beverage of choice in town.
The drive from Blue Sky Retreat to Red River is 36 miles of the most scenic and breath-taking views of all of Northern New Mexico. You will most likely want to pull over to take a few selfies to remember Mother Nature’s majestic Beauty in this enchanted land.
Columbine Canyon is located between Questa and Red River at 184 NM-38, Red River, NM 87558
The Red River and Columbine Creek flow through the area and trailhead leads into the Columbine Twining hiking trail system. Columbine Campground sits at 7,900 feet in elevation and is one of the nicest campsites in Northern New Mexico.
The Columbine Canyon campground is composed of two loops. One small loop at the campground entrance, has all open sites and views of the towering mountains. The other is a long loop up the canyon along the fast-flowing Columbine Creek. The campsites in this loop are tucked in among pine, spruce and some aspen providing ample shade and good privacy between campsites.
The Columbine Twining hiking trail can be found at the south end of the campground and gives access to 14 miles of hiking trails. The Red River runs near the campground and can be accessed near the first loop.
This campground offers 27 single sites, potable water, and vault toilets. Each site is has a fire ring, picnic table, and tent pad.
We have discovered an abandoned mining tunnel along the trail. If you want to explore it, bring a jacket as it is really cold inside even in the heat of the summer and a flashlight.
